Road to Wellness

"My Name is Mora Denise Wolting.  I became a patient of Dr. Henderson when I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer.  I saw my oncologist and he recommended Dr. Henderson.  In 2018 when I had my first appointment,  my husband was out of town and they arranged for him to phone in for the visit.  I was met in the hall by the doctor's warm smile.  She came into the room with members of her staff and explained what I had and what was in store for us on our journey.  She answered all of my questions...boy what a shocker it was to hear the stage and that I would have a long fight ahead.  "Yes you will loose your hair." she answered...my red hair I had taken so much pride of.  We told her we had a planned Disney World trip in two weeks.  After some discussion she and my oncologist agreed to let us go.   The night we traveled to Florida I was settling in for bed and she CALLED me to see how my flight was and how I was doing.  Who does that?!  She placed my port, removed lymph nodes and was my champion in through the treatment.  She was so very excited to tell me that the cancer had not traveled anywhere else.  When the chemo was over, she removed at the port and took out the remaining tumor. Then I started radiation.  When radiation was over I developed a bad infection and had to be hospitalized.  My mistake was not calling her first!  Once I left the hospital I was still very infected and sick.  My instinct said call Dr. Henderson.  She saw me and drained the infection.  I had to come back and she opened up the area and I started the wound packing experience.  She is always honest and caring and I love her so much!  I truly believe she is there to treat my overall health - not just the breast cancer.  I credit Dr. Henderson for her kindness and her attitude to fight this all the way.  She saved my life...for real!!  If anyone is reading this, know that a breast cancer diagnosis is not the end.  She will educate you and she will fight very hard to give you the best possible care.  She knows her stuff!!  What a gift she is!"

"As a journalism professor at the University of Oregon and a practicing journalist, my job is to report the news. I am pleased to report to whomever you wish to spread this news that my wife Sheila Swan and I are so very pleased Dr. Winnie Henderson was her choice for needed surgery. The pre-op experiences were handled with grace and fine care. The surgery was flawless. And the post-op followup was reassuring and efficient. Of course we hope to never need her fine care again but we recommend her professionalism to those who may."

Sincerely, Peter Laufer, James Wallace Chair Professor in Journalism, University of Oregon

"I was referred to Dr. Henderson after a colonoscopy showed a polyp that was large enough to require surgical removal. During the surgery Dr. Henderson inspected my colon thoroughly and sent samples to the lab at the hospital which came back as cancerous. At that point, as Dr. Henderson and I had discussed before the surgery, I required a Right Hemicolectomy, removal of half of my colon. Dr. Henderson checked in on me everyday of my 5 day hospitalization. I followed up several times with Dr. Henderson after the surgery. Each and every time I met with Dr. Henderson I felt that everything was explained to me in detail in a way I could fully understand. Dr. Henderson was always genuinely upbeat and caring about my health and well being. I always knew what was going on with my health and what the alternatives and side effects were going to be. I can say honestly that I trust Dr. Henderson with my life and I can honestly say that Dr. Henderson's skill and knowledge saved my life. I would trust Dr. Henderson with the life of my child without hesitation."

“When I came to Dr. Henderson, I was looking for answers. I’d been getting mammograms and ultrasounds every six months for quite some time to watch a concerning spot on my left breast. When I met with Dr. Henderson, she recommended an MRI. When my insurance didn’t want to cover it, she got on the phone personally and convinced them it was necessary. And it’s a good thing she did. While they didn’t find anything in my left breast, they did find something in my right breast. I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ – the earliest form of breast cancer. The type of cancer found was a rare form, so Dr. Henderson immediately brought my case to the Tumor Board for discussion. With their input, Dr. Henderson helped me decide on a mastectomy as opposed to a lumpectomy. That decision gave me peace of mind, and, in making that decision, I was spared radiation treatment. Due to the nature of my cancer, Dr. Henderson also removed my sentinel lymph nodes, using the mastectomy incision, as opposed to making a separate incision. She took a personal interest in my case, and I am thankful for her due diligence. Had she not pushed the insurance company to cover the MRI and not sought the opinions of other experts, my outcome could have been much different. Because we caught it early, I didn’t need radiation or chemo – and I couldn’t be happier about that. Two years later, she performed my gallbladder surgery, which also went very well. I would highly recommend Dr. Henderson to anyone.”

“When I called to schedule an appointment, I was told it would be ten days before I could be seen. But the very next day, I got a call back from someone who said Dr. Henderson wanted to see me right away. She’d reviewed my case and knew what I was facing and decided I couldn’t wait – that, obviously, meant the world to me. I was diagnosed with very aggressive triple-negative breast cancer with an 80% growth rate. At my appointment, Dr. Henderson explained everything that was going to happen, very thoroughly, knowing that my treatment was going to move quickly. But she didn’t rush. She and her assistant took their time and treated me – not like just another patient – but like a human being. I knew she had lots of people to see, but she really made me feel special. Less than a month after my double mastectomy and reconstruction, my house burned down. Not very long afterward, I got a call from Dr. Henderson personally, who wanted to know how I was doing and asked to meet with me. I happened to be visiting the hospital for another reason, so I stopped by her office. When I got there, she and her team presented me with a wonderful gift, along with a bunch of gift cards, to help us get back on our feet. It was a beautiful gesture.”

“I have friends who had Dr. Henderson as a surgeon, who assured me she was the best person to perform my procedure when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. So, I was already at ease when I met her. And they were right – she is one of the most positive, reassuring people you’ll ever meet. She always took the time to answer my questions and was never in a hurry. My husband and I were able to make some important decisions, based on the information she gave us, and we never felt pressured one way or the other. She and her team also worked closely with my insurance company to ensure all the necessary tests were covered. And I’m very pleased with the way the surgery turned out. If you didn’t know me, you’d never know I had surgery. I’m healthy now, and I have Dr. Henderson and many other people to thank for that.”

“I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Henderson. I spent two weeks in a fog after my breast cancer diagnosis, and I was very scared. When I went to see her, I had so many questions, but she answered them before I could even ask them. After meeting with her, I knew step by step what was going to happen. We talked about every aspect of my treatment, from surgery to chemotherapy. She didn’t make me feel like a cancer patient, she made me feel like a survivor. When I left that day, I had hope. And she did an amazing job. I am a large-chested woman, and I was worried what I would look like after my lumpectomy. We decided to do immediate reconstruction, and, by doing that, she made me feel whole again. She corrected the other side to match a year later, after my chemotherapy. I could have gone to a plastic surgeon, but I didn’t want anyone else – my trust was in her. She made my breast cancer diagnosis not only bearable but beautiful.”

“I was diagnosed with stage II invasive breast cancer in June of 2016. From the moment Dr. Kollmorgen called me to confirm the results of my biospy, I knew I was in good hands. She and her team acted quickly, getting me set up for my next steps, including surgery to place my port for chemotherapy. Dr. Kollmorgen and I discussed a surgical plan at length; she explained my options and which treatment route would provide the best possible outcome for me. Her knowledge and attentiveness helped me feel secure and confident in my decision to have a double mastectomy. The care I received from, not only Dr. Kollmorgen, but Dr. Henderson, the Breast Team and the office staff, was absolutely phenomenal. There are not enough words to express my gratefulness to this team. They have changed my life with their care and support—a life I am now living, cancer-free.”

“It’s a shock to learn you have breast cancer – especially if you are male. And to have to go through mammogram testing can be humiliating. Dr. Kollmorgen was the first person to shine some light on my situation and offer me hope when I was really feeling down. She was very professional and reassuring, and she was great about explaining everything in a way I could understand. She even provided me a detailed chart that outlined all of my options. I chose to have a lumpectomy without chemotherapy or radiation. It’s been two years since my surgery, and I am cancer-free. My advice to anyone is to pay attention to the signs and symptoms and get a second opinion, if needed. If you are diagnosed, it’s important to do your research – there’s a lot of information out there. I am very happy with the outcome of my surgery. Dr. Kollmorgen and her staff did an excellent job. I would recommend her to anyone going through the same thing.”
